YOU ARE THE HULK
Imagine if you were a 98 lb. weakling all of your life and then were transformed into the Hulk. The difference would be absolutely fantastic! Now imagine that you are a 98 lb. weakling spiritually speaking. Constantly beaten down by sin, the flesh, the enemy, and the world. Always defeated, depressed, and hopeless. That is exactly how all of us were. But that was before we became a Christian. Now, we have Jesus. In Christ, you have been transformed. You are no longer who you were. You are a NEW CREATION, the old you is gone, forever. When you were “born again” you didn’t get a fresh start at making the old you. You got a brand new you that is completely new, from the inside out. You are no longer a 98 lb. spiritual weakling. Spiritually, you are the Hulk in Christ! So why do you still struggle with the same issues as the old you? Why does it seem that the only change is that now you are more religious and much more aware of your shortcomings and failures? Where is the victory? I thought you were the Hulk. You must be a bigger sinner than you thought. Or not. Maybe you are just lacking some key information.
OK…so back to our weakling idea. As a weakling you found it difficult to open a pickle jar. You had to have your wife do it for you (Ok ladies, just go along with this). Stuck drawers, twist-off caps, carrying in the heavy groceries, you needed her to help with all of these. You wished you were stronger. You prayed for strength, but nothing every changed.
Then, one day, you had a supernatural encounter with the great “trainer-in-the-sky” and he sprinkled you with Gold’s dust (you know, from the gym) and Shazam! You are transformed. You are the Hulk! You are a rippling, hunk, full of power and strength. You make Schwarzenegger look like a weakling.
But the funny thing is, it is so hard to remember that you really have been transformed. When you see a pickle jar you still call for your wife. She chuckles and she tells you to look in the mirror. You pop open the jar with ease and you laugh. How silly! Someone like you, being intimidated by a pickle jar. You have been transformed…you are the Hulk! But you constantly have to be reminded who you are because you still have not fully wrapped your head around it. You still have the old tapes running in your head. You need to keep reminding yourself of the truth. You have been completely changed but you need your mind to be transformed by renewing the information in there…you need a total re-boot.
This is exactly what we experience as Christians. We have been completely made new. We are powerful in Christ. The old is gone and the new has come. But, all too often, we forget who we are and we revert to the old tapes. We need to have our minds renewed so we can experience the transformation that has already taken place. If we don’t get a good grasp of who we are and what took place when we accepted Christ, then we will continually behave as if we were never changed at all. “Know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). As Peter says, “You are shortsighted and blind, having forgotten who you are. You need reminding!” (2 Peter 1:9) You don’t need to become new, you are new (2 Corinthians 5:17). It’s a done deal. It’s not about your work it’s about the finished work of Christ.
Many teach that you have been transformed and then they add this crazy thought: But it is only “positionally.” In other words, you have been forgiven of your past sins and you have been granted a “get-out-of-jail-free” card. That card holds a reservation for where you will be seated in the heavenlies (Ephesians 2:6), when you die. But now, in this life, you must do all you can to overcome your old nature and try to become holy, pure and acceptable. Don’t blow it. You see, in this fairytale, your “gym dust” didn’t really change you at all, but it did give you a gym membership. Now that your sin is covered, you can go to this exclusive gym and start your training program toward a transformed you.
You have a personal trainer, the Holy Spirit, who will guide you and point out the areas you need to work on. He will give you encouragement as you continue to work your hardest. Over the course of time, you may see some growth but it will always be a difficult struggle. You will not really be completely transformed until you are dead. At that moment your membership will be converted into a V.I.P. card, allowing you to enter into the heavenlies where you will see Jesus and then, you will be completely transformed. Until that day, you must grit your teeth and make every effort to workout your transformation with fear and trembling. You have a club membership. Oh, and according to some, if you don’t get going, it is possible you could actually have your membership revoked. Get busy!
Here is the truth: You are the Hulk! Christ died to take away your sin and he gave you a brand new you…the spiritual Hulk. You have power, authority, freedom, joy, abundant life and a whole lot more. So, pick up your Bible and learn who you are and what that really means (Romans 12:2; 10:17). You are awesome in Christ! You have been made new (Galatians 6:15; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2:20). In Christ you have overcome the enemy. He cannot harm you (Luke 10:19). You have not been given a spirit of fear, but of love power and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Your struggle is not agains your old nature or against “sin” or anything else. In Christ, your salvation and your holiness are complete and permanent! Your struggle is not to be holy, it is to believe what the bible says (you ARE holy) and to step into the reality that is already there. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen (Hebrews 11:1). In other words, there are things that really exist, although unseen, so, like Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade, believe that the Word of God is true, take that step of faith (onto the invisible bridge), and experience the reality of your New Creation! No matter what anyone else tells you, God’s word is true…You ARE the Hulk. Now go enjoy your abundant, victorious, joyful life in Christ!
